Te Kairanga is an estate in the Martinborough region of New Zealand. The name means ‘land of plenty’. The first Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1980 and the winery was founded in 1984. In XXXX a shipment of Te Kairanga Pinot Noir was turned away from Germany because of excess copper content (the level of 2.4ppm of copper had breached the European limit which is 1 ppm.). Te Kairanga’s acting chief Ian Frame was quoted as saying it was “no surprise” that the wines had a high level of copper, since copper was added to take away the odours from sulphur compounds produced during winemaking. Food Safety Authority principal toxicology adviser John Reeve was quoted as saying there was no associated health risk at such low levels as at least 200-300 parts per million would have to be ingested before going above the acceptable daily intake.’
