Stammersdorf is a wine village which since 1938 belongs to the Vienna region of Austria (the Austrian State of Vienna). Stammersdorf is one of the oldest settlements in the Vienna area on the “other side” or north side of the Danube and in its current form probably goes back to a foundation around the year 1000, when Franconians and Bavarians settled here. Admittedly, they were by far not the first people to set foot in this area, as is proven by finds such as the so-called “Venus vom Bisamberg”, a small statue from around 4,000 BC, which was excavated in the area of Langenersdorf in 1955. Around a third of Viennese wine is pressed in Stammersdorf.
Stammersdorf has a wealth of wine-growing and Heurigen businesses and the Stammerdorfer Kellergasse is considered the most beautiful in town. Numerous ravines lead from the village to the Bisamberg vineyard site. One of these ravines is the Stammersdorfer Kellergasse or wine cellar street. The Kellergasse begins at the intersection of Clessgasse – Hagenbrunner Strasse and climbs steeply towards the north. In numerous cellars it is said again and again “is unplugged”. Every year, two events bring numerous guests and friends of this genuine wine culture to the Stammersdorfer Kellergasse. In spring the “Mailüfterl” and in autumn the “stormy days” attracts people to the Kellergasse.
