Serraiola is an estate in Località Serraiola, in Monterotondo Marittimo, Grosseto Province, in coastal south-west Tuscany, Italy

Owner: Fiorella Lenzi. A games teacher who changed direction to work at her father’s estate which he bought in 1968. She was head of the Strada del Vino in 2005.

Estate vineyards: Near Val di Cornia and Suvereto. From 1968 traditional Tuscan grapes like Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Malvasia were planted. From 1991 Fiorella Lenzi planted French grapes like Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Traminer, and from 1994 she planted Vermentino, Syrah and Merlot. In 2004 there were 10ha of vines, plus land for wheat, olives and maize. Mid-slope, limestone.

White wines

Maremma Bianco DOC: 2004 100% Vermentino. 7,000 bottles. €6.00 prezzo a rivenditori. Clean, fresh lime fruit; light but well made, slight cheese at finish, hint of sweetness and butter too, but good (in Monteregio di Massa Marittima 12th March 2005).

Red wines

Maremma Rosso DOC, Campo Montecristo: 2003 50% Merlot and a bit of Syrah and Sangiovese. 12 months in barrels. 5,000 bottles. €12 prezzo per operatori. Bit sweaty and green, and seems to be quite chocolate as well (in Monteregio di Massa Marittima 12th March 2005).

Monteregio di Massa Marittima Bianco, Violina: 2004 50% Trebbiano Toscano, 50% Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc & Traminer. 8,000 bottles. A whiff of sulphur, soft style, not for ageing, a little bit fat maybe but clean and well made (in Monteregio di Massa Marittima 12th March 2005).

Monteregio di Massa Marittima Rosso, Cervone: 2004 100% Sangiovese. 15,000 bottles. No wood. Nice clean fruit, some fizz, simple but not bad, good lighter style, good to buy young wines in spring I think and drink them straight away (in Monteregio di Massa Marittima 12th March 2005).

Monteregio di Massa Marittima Rosso, Lentisco: Made as an easy, early style of red. | 2003 100% Sangiovese. Barrels for 6m; second year oak. 10,000 bottles. A bit light and sweaty but authentic at least; not bad but not for keeping (in Monteregio di Massa Marittima 12th March 2005).
