Secano Interior is a region in the wider Maule region of Chile. It is known for its old País and Carignan noir vines, and dry farming. See MOVI.
Grape varieties: The main varieties planted in the Secano Interior are called patrimonial varieties: País, Muscat of Alexandria, Carignan, and Cinsault. Some white varieties are also planted, such as Semillon and Chasselas Dorè (Corinto).
Climate: Dry summers, four distinct seasons.
Viticulture: Vines can be dry farmed and hence the area was chosen for the first plantings of País in Chile around 400 years ago. Soil preparation (ploughing) is geared to let any precipitation be absorbed whilst promoting deep rooting. Boron additions may need to be made.
