Ribatejo is one of three key wine regions in southern Portugal, the others being Estremadura and Alentejo. Ribatejo is divided in two by the River Tegus. The region is described by Jo Burzynska (2000) as having ‘suffered from overproduction in the fertile flood plains, but EU grants have meant producers have uprooted these vineyards [thus] raising the general quality of the region’s wines.’
