Prugnolo Gentile is the name of an entry on Italy’s National Registry of grape varieties. This is incorrect because the actual name of the variety in question is Sangiovese and ‘Prugnolo Gentile’ is merely a synonym for Sangiovese used by growers making Rosso di Montpulciano DOC and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG red wines. Although the ‘Prugnolo Gentile’ grape variety does not exist, biotypes of Sangiovese called Prugnolo Gentile do. See also Brunello (sic).
