Poggio Trevvalle is an organic estate winery in Campagnatico in Grosseto province in south-west Tuscany. The main wines are bottled under the Montecucco DOC and the Morellino di Scansano DOCG.
Owners: Umberto (born 1963) and Bernardo Valle (born 1965), two brothers from Foggia in Puglia in southern Italy, bought the estate in 1998. The previous owner, a Sr Ferretti from a long-established Capagnatico family, sold because he was nearing retirement but his son (who worked in the military) was not interested in taking it on, partly because the vineyard was dominated by old vines which needed replanting, and thus investment. At the time the vines were already in official conversion to full organic certification.
Estate vineyards: 17 hectares (42 acres) of land, of which 14 hectares (34.5 acres) are vineyards. Over 85% of the vines are Sangiovese. The remaining 15% are Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vine density ranges from 3,300 vines/ha (older vines) to between 4,500-6,000+ vines/ha (those planted since 2000 by the Valle brothers). Most of the vines are trained to “cordon de Royat”.
Organic certification: 2000 First vintage with full organic certification. | 2018 Still certified organic.
Biodynamics: 2019 Member of Renaissance des Appellations.
Pink wines
Toscana Rosato: Sangiovese.
Red wines
Toscana Oscana Rosso, Santipe: Santippe was the wife of Socrates. | 2007 Sangiovese. Fermented in stainles steel. MLF in cement. Nice and bright if a bit green at Millésime Bio 2009.
Toscana Rosso, Rafele (sic): Their only wine not made with Sangiovese.
Montecucco Rosso DOC, Trevalle: 60% Sangiovese, 20% each Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot. The Bordeaux grapes are planted on the north-facing side of Poggio Trevvalle, where the soil is sandy with clay banks. | 2007 Tasted at Millésime Bio 2009.
Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Trevalle: 90% Sangiovese, 7% Merlot, 3% Alicante. This is also sold in Italy under the private label ‘Fròndina’.
Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Frondina: 2003 ‘Fròndina’. ICEA. Unfiltered so will throw a sediment. Lovely wild fruit nose and some dirt and earth; slight fizz on the palate too but nice grainy tannins and wildness, picked ripe but not over-ripe (it was a hot year) at Argiano on 4th March 2005.
Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Passera: From free run and first press.
Morellino di Scansano DOCG, Arcille: Made from the best grapes: Sangiovese from two different vineyards. Aged in 30hl botti. The wine is named after the local ‘borgo’ of Arcille, a frazione of the comune of Campagnatico, close to the Ombrone river and 6.25 miles (10km) from Campagnatico as the crow flies but 19km by road. | 2002 The wood has dried this somewhat on the nose and palate but this has very good texture and softness and decent weight too and is one of the better wines of the day if far from perfect but it does have decent flavour at the Morellino Consorzio on Wed 2nd March 2005. | 2007 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. Soft at Millésime Bio 2009. €13 public.
Toscana Rosso Anema e Core: Made in a ‘palmento’ (or a ‘lagare’ in Portuguese), an open shallow concrete vat. Part- de-stemmed, foot trodden. Run off as soon as fermentation ends. | 2016 100% Sangiovese. Fermented in ‘palmenti’. 30% whole bunches, 70% destemmed. 14%.
