Podere Bellarina is located in Località La Bellarina in Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the south-east of the Montalcino region, in Tuscany. In 1992 Podere Bellarina was purchased by Tenute Niccolai who marketed the wine under the ‘Palagetto’ brand. In 2014 Tenute Niccolai sold the Podere Bellarina vineyards called Poggio Celsi (but retained the Bellarina and Palagetto brands) to the owners of Collemassari (in the neighbouring Montecucco DOC region) who already owned Bellarina’s neighbour in Montalcino, Poggio di Sotto. In late 2016 Poggio di Sotto’s owners (Collemassari) incorporated Poggio Celsi’s 3 hectares (7.41 acres) of vines into those of Tenuta San Giorgio which also belongs to Collemassari.
The second iteration of the Bellarina vineyards comprises a small farm of 5.5 hectares at an altitude of about 360 m above sea level. The site, mostly clayey, looks toward Mount Amiata and the Orcia valley. The vineyards are divided into two parcels, the so-called “high vineyard”, which gives a full-bodied wine like the Brunello Riserva and the “low vineyard” for Brunello. Production is about 1.5 kg per vine. Harvest is manual in small aerated boxess. Production is about 6.000 bottles of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, and 12,000 bottles of Rosso di Montalcino DOC.
