Neuburger is a white wine grape variety, a (natural) crossing of Roter Veltliner and Silvaner identified the 1800s and found in Austria’s Burgenland and Wachau regions.
Synonyms: Grüner Burgunder (Wachau). ‘Beautifully textured dry wines with a pronounced nutty flavour,’ says Giles MacDonogh (1992, p.34).
Vineyard area: 2020 550 of the 44,000 hectares of Austrian vineyards are Neuburger (Kurt Feiler of Feiler-Artinger).
Viticulture: Rot-prone due to thin skins.
Wine style: Kurt Feiler says Neuburger ‘produces elegant wines that have a typical, extremely pleasant tartness, the so-called “Nusserl”, or nuttiness with in the finish with age. In the vineyard, the Neuburger places the highest demands on the care and diligence of the winegrowers. Therefore its cultivation keeps decreasing. The Neuburger loves dry, warm years, like 2019.’ Neuburger is well-suited to late picked styles which age well in bottle, says Giles MacDonogh (1992, p.34).
Wine style: Rich, full bodied.
