The Festival of the Song Thrush takes place in Montalcino in the Province of Siena on the last weekend in October. Dating from 1958 it celebrates the annual song thrush migration and its hunting tradition since the Middle Ages. The return of the hunters and falconers with their quarry was a cause for celebration by nobles and commoners alike. Men challenged each other in tournaments, while women organized banquets with quarry and local wine. During the two day-Festival, two delegates from each of Montalcino’s four Quartieri face themselves in an archery competition. Each archer wears traditional colours (Borghetto: white and red; Pianello: white and blue; Ruga: yellow and blue; Travaglio: yellow and red). On Saturday morning there is a parade after which the Sagra del Tordo can begin, and a few thrushes are freed. On Sunday afternoon, once the tournament is over, the winning Quartiere collects a silver arrow.
