The Massif Central is a highland region in the middle of Southern France, consisting of mountains (see the Chaîne des Puys) and plateaus. It covers about 15% of mainland France. It is described as a ‘huge, indulating plateau, wild, pastoral and haunting in its beauty,’ (Hugh Johnson & Hubrecht Duijker: 1987, p.19).
