Languedoc AOC replaced the Coteaux du Languedoc AOC in May 2007. It is a regional AOC covering 36 AOCs across 40,000ha and 495 communes in the Aude, Gard and Pyrenees Orientales departments. Languedoc region of France. The wines can be labelled as follows: Languedoc primeur ou nouveau rosé, Languedoc primeur ou nouveau rouge, Languedoc rosé, and Languedoc rouge.
Climate: Mediterranean, considerably hot and dry.
Geology: Varied, mainly consisting of the hard limestone of the garigue, plus schist and river-borne gravel.
Geography: Languedoc AOC extends across 495 communes along France’s Mediterranean coast, from the Spanish border as far as Nîmes, and inland to the Montagne Noire and the Cevennes. The diversity of the land and the characteristics of the Languedoc AOC wines is reflected by the establishment of a three level hierarchy:
