La Togata is an estate in the hamlet of Sant’Angelo in Colle in the south-west of the Montalcino region of Tuscany, once part of the neighbouring Tenuta di Argiano estate. It produces Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG red wines.

Owner: Danilo Tonon (an attorney; Colombian I think) founded the La Togata winery in 1990 in Montalcino. It was named after his then wife, Carla Tonon, a magistrate, hence ‘La Togata’, the lady in the robe. At some stage Danilo and Carla divorced and he re-married. His second wife is called Jeanneth Angel. [Between them] Danilo and Jeanneth Tonon (née Angel) have four children: Stephania, Vanessa, Azzurra and Danilo Jacopo. See also the Vini Italiani da Sogno estate in Montalcino  which is run by Jeanneth Angel’s daughter, Stephania Angel.

Owner: Jeanneth Angel told me that she ‘manages the La Togata winery which produces Brunello La Togata,’ adding that the La Togata winery and her daughter Stephania Poveda Angel’s Vini Italiani da Sogno estate ‘have vineyards whose age and altitude differ. [At some stage] the La Togata winery moved from the old cellar in Tavernelle to a new, more efficient one in Sant’Angelo in Colle. This cellar is shared with Vini Italiani da Sogno [which see]. Spaces are divided, and barrels for each brand are kept separate. The two wineries have completely different styles. La Togata is more modern, with more tannic wines, aged in 40hl vats and barriques. Vini Italiani da Sogno is a more traditional style, with less tannins and the wines are aged in 80hl wooden vats. My daughter [Stephania Poveda Angel] and I are competitors in a fair and friendly way.”

Vineyards: Jeanneth told me ‘La Togata wines come from vineyards located between Pieve di San Sigismondo, Montosoli and Pietrafocaia. At the beginning, the vineyard was only small vineyard but now covers more than 16 hectares in the south of Montalcino.” 5,500 vines/ha.

Winery: The La Togata wines are fermented and aged in a winery in Sant’Angelo in Colle whose exterior resembles a old Venetian Villa. Computerised, air-conditioned. The botti are made by Garbellotto (Conegliano), Pauscha (Austria). Barrels from Tonellerie Barthomieu. The barrels are placed under the soil surrunded by rocks at a natural costant temperature at or below 18°C.
