Juliénas AOC, the most underrated of the ten Beaujolais crus according to Clive Coates MW (1990, p.185).
Communes: Émeringes, Juliénas, Jullié, Pruzilly.
Terroir: The vineyards are on high ground north and west of Chénas, an advantage in wet years or those of great heat prior to the vintages (Clive Coates MW: 1990, p.185).
Wine production & vineyard area: 2002 31,814hl from 609ha (Guide Hachette des Vins 2004, p.166).
Wine style: ‘Serious Beaujolais, big and tannic enough to develop in bottle,’ (Oz Clarke: 2015, p.149). Firm structure, less powerful or fruity than Moulin à Vent or Fleurie respectively, wines which develop considerable depth (Clive Coates MW: 1990, p.185).
