Grosse lage is a German term used from 2013 by member wineries of Germany’s Verband Deutscher Pradikatsweinguter, or VDP association. The term is used for VDP vineyards classified as Grosse Lage or Grand cru vineyard sites capable of giving  ‘grosses gewächs’ or First Growth dry wines.  Prior to that, the term ‘erste lage’ was used for such vineyards, but since 2013 Erste lage has been used for the lesser premier cru tier, leaving Grosse Lage for the grand cru tier. All Grosses Gewächs come from a Grosses Lage, the Grand Cru equivalent and the best vineyards according to the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP)
