2019: In 2019 14% of the French vineyard was certified organic or Biodynamic (Agence Bio France).

2018: In 2018 12% of the French vineyard was certified organic or Biodynamic (Agence Bio France).

2016: France is the leading EU organic wine producer, with a 9% share and an18% growth in 2016 compared with 2017 (Source: Organic farming in the EU, A fast growing sector (EU Agricultural Markets Briefs), March 2019, p.8). In 2016 France had the world’s third largest surface area of organic vines, after Spain and Italy. A total of 70,740 hectares (174,730 acres) or 9% of the French vineyard was certified organic or Biodynamic or in conversion in 2017, with 5,263 growers producing nearly 2 million hectolitres of wine (Source: Agence Bio). Of this total, Demeter France certified 5,500 hectares (12,350 acres) of Biodynamic vines from 418 wine-growers with a further 50 asking for certification.

2015: In 2015 France had nearly 4,800 certified organic wine grape growers (Source: Agence Bio). Their combined 68,565 hectares (169,355 acres) of vines represented 8.7% of the national vineyard surface (Millésime Bio 2017 Dossier de Presse p.9). Just over half of France’s organic wine production of 1.5 million hl was sold in France, a market worth 670 million euros (‘Situation du marché des vins bios en France,’ by Didier Perréol, President of Agence Bio).

Organic wines – key figures for France in 2015 (source: Agence Bio 2016): 5,186 organic estates, 60,088ha certified organic (up 10%) out of a total of 71,439ha of organic vines or undergoing conversion (up 8% in 1 year). Organic vines represent 9.1% of all vines in France. Market: turnover of €1bn. (up 17.2% in 1 year). The home market represents around 60% of sales and exports around 40%. In 2014, wine accounted for 2/3 of French organic exports in terms of value (or: €290 million out of €435 million).

2013: In 2013 France had 64,610 hectares (159,655 acres) of organic vineyards, or 8.2% of the national vineyard of which 64,012 hectares or 99% was devoted to wine grapes. There were 4,577 organic wine grape growers. 24% of the wine grape surface area was in conversion to full organic certification. 197 co-operatives were producing organic wine (compared to 70 in 2009), 8 of them producing only organic wine. Over 75% of France’s organic vineyards were found in 4 regions: Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Aquitaine, and Rhône-Alpes.The above data was presented by Elisabeth Mercier of Agence Bio in Panorama de la Viticulture bio en France et dans le Monde, presented at the Millésime Bio organic wine fair, 27 January 2015, Montpellier, France.

2010: At the end of 2010 France had 3,945 organic wine-growers with 50,268 ha, or 6,1% of the national vineyard. The four main regions were Languedoc­ Roussillon, Provence­ Alpes­ Côte­d’Azur, Aquitaine and Rhône-­Alpes with more than three-quarters of France’s organic vineyard. France’s organic vineyard doubled between 2007 and 2010.

2005: In 2005 France had 16,506 hectares (acres) of organic vines (Agence Bio). In 2005 the Syndicat International des Vignerons en Culture Bio Dynamique (SIVCBD) had 37 wine grape vineyard members with a collective 1,147 hectares (2,833 acres) of vines.

2004: In 2004 Demeter France certified 4,250 hectares of farmland and 175 French farms. In 2004 the Syndicat International des Vignerons en Culture Bio Dynamique (SIVCBD) had 22 wine grape vineyard members with a collective 750 hectares (1,855 acres) of vines.

2003: In 2003 Demeter France certified 1,250 hectares (3,088 acres) of vineyards as Biodynamic which were owned by 78 vineyard members of which 6 growers with 70 hectares (173 acres) made no wine.

2002: In 2002 France’s total surface area of fully organic vineyards and vineyards in conversion to organics was 14,576 hectares (36,003 acres) which represented 1.4% of French vineyard surface area. Of this Demeter France said it certified 1,008 hectares (2,450 acres) of vineyards as Biodynamic which were owned by 55 vineyard members in 2002. Overall, 1.55% of French wine producers were organic.

2001: In 2001 Demeter France certified 650 hectares (1,605 acres) of vineyards as Biodynamic.

1998: In 1998 Demeter France certified 400 hectares (988 acres) of vineyards as Biodynamic which were owned by 15 vineyard members.
