Filetta di Lamole is a 100% Sangiovese organic red wine from Lamole, a locality (‘frazione’) in Greve-in-Chianti, a commune in Tuscany’s Chianti Classico DOCG region. It results from a partnership between Giovanni Manetti of Fontodi and his cousin Lorenzo Pisana-Socci. When Giovanni Manetti replanted his vineyards at Fontodi he had used budwood from vines in what is Filetta di Lamole, Lamole being the highest altitude sub-zone of Greve in Chianti. The Socci family have been in Lamole since 1045. Lorenzo’s great-grandfather did bottle wine from here in the 1920s. But from the 1990s Lorenzo had sold the wine in bulk. This was because the site is a tough one and expensive to work.
Vineyards: The property in Lamole is called Filetta. The vines are on small terraces on ‘arenaria’ (sandstone) soil. Altitude of 600 metres a.sl. There are 7 ha of 100% Sangiovese. Grassed. Together Lorenzo and Giovanni restored the vineyard ready for the first bottled vintage in 2014. The partner-owners work the soil as little as possible to avoid erosion.
Winemaking: Manetti’s cousin picks the grapes and ferments the wine with help from Fontodi in Lamole’s historic winery in cement tanks. The wine then ages at Fontodi. The wine is very scented. Cherry – but floral – violets (mammola). Bocca – elegant, finesse. Burgundy-like.
Organic certification: Yes.
