Ferrero is an estate winery in Località Pascena on the southern south-west slopes of the Montalcino region, Tuscany, Italy. It was created in the late1990s by Pablo Harri (winemaker for nearby Banfi) and his wife Claudia Ferrero and their three daughters, one of whom is Giulia Harri. Ferrero produces wines under the Sant’Antimo Rosso DOC, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. It also produces Montecucco DOC wines from vines in the commune of Montenero.

The estate: The heart of the winery is a traditional stone-built farmhouse dating from about 1900. The ground floor, the stable and the barn were renovated into vinification and ageing cellars. 

Estate vineyards: 5.5ha (13.5 acres) of vines in total. 3ha (7,5 acres) of Sangiovese below Sant’Angelo in Colle in Montalcino for Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Also 2.4ha near Montenero d’Orcia, from which we obtain an IGT Toscana Rosso.

Red wines

Rosso di Montalcino DOC: 2012 8,000 bottles. 50% steel, 50% used barrels. Quite sweet and a bit stewy (Anteprima 2014). | 2013 11,730 bottles. Simple Pinot Noir nose, raspberry jam, light and very simple, vin de soif (Anteprima 2015). | 2014 Bright nose, bit stretched and Banfi-like on mid-palate (Anteprima 2016).

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: 2000 A bit green and light and too little flavour really, tight style, but clear and older wood not too bad (Anteprima 2005). | 2009 L-2012. 14.5%. Bright cherry colour and nose, with aromatic sappiness. Tannins are overtly round with firmness underneath, harmonised by oak. Bright and immediate at the Consorzio Tues 27th May 2014 with Ian d’Agata and others. | 2009 7,280 bottles. Bit green and thick (Anteprima 2014). | 2010 5,490 bottles. Bit thick and simple, also greenish too, bit of rubber–lacks selection (Benvenuto 2015). | 2011 Simple, bit baked, grubby and tanky (Anteprima 2016).

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva: 2009 1,200 bottles. Thick, a bit sherry-like, plump but with no great length (Benvenuto 2015). | 2010 Nice, if simple, fruit (Anteprima 2016).
