Fattoria Sorbaiano is an estate in Montecatini Val di Cecina, Tuscany making wines under the Montescudaio DOC.
Owner: The Piccolini family.
White wines
Bianco: 1999 Trebbiano, Colombard. Decent sherry nose; savoury; well made if a tad alcoholic and lean; not bad (Bolgheri wine route office, 22 Feb 2005).
Montescudaio Bianco DOC: 2003 80% Trebbiano Toscano + 10% Chardonnay + 10% Viognier. 15,000 bottles.
Montescudaio Bianco DOC, Lucestraia: 2003 Chardonnay, Viognier. 10,000 bottles.
Red wines
Montescudaio Rosso DOC: 2002 80% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera, 10% Montepulciano. 18,000 bottles. Soft, sexy, ripe chocolate fruit with soft tannins, well made, clean and fruity if quite simple, but immediately appealing and not over-extracted so good (Bolgheri wine route office, 22 Feb 2005).
Montescudaio Rosso DOC, Rosso del Miniere: 2001 60% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malvasia Nera. 13,000 bottles. A bit green I think, but soft red fruit behind some slightly aggressive tannins, and cleanish, plus there appears to be some weight (and alcohol) from the vines which I guess are young but being made to work hard by the grower (Bolgheri wine route office, 22 Feb 2005).
Toscana Rosso, Pian del Conte Sangiovese: 2002 100% Sangiovese.10,000 bottles. Deep colour and smoky oak on the nose; quite dry tannin from the wood but also plenty of blackcurrant so also surely some Cabernet Sauvignon in this (Bolgheri wine route office, 22 Feb 2005).
Vin Santo
Vin Santo DOC: 80% Trebbiano, 20% Colombano.
Other crops: Olio extra vergine di oliva and cereals.
