Famous Fosssil is a winery in the US state of Illinois.
Owners: Ken and Pam Rosmann.
Estate vineyards: Thousands of years ago, three glaciers crossed the land that became the Famous Fossil vineyard, and the estate is named after the fossils dug up whilst planting in 2004. The vines were sited on the hillsides of the 22 acre northern Illinois farm. Famous Fossil wines use fruit and grape varieties developed specifically for the cold climate of the U.S. Great Lakes region. In 2001 the owners told me they had no V vinifera vines (too cold). Instead they planted 12 hybrids such as Frontenac for red, St Croix for red, La Crescent for white.
Certification: 2008 First vintage with full Demeter Biodynamic certification.
Winery: The winery was built in 2007 and overlooks the vineyard.
