Extremadura is a region in Spain, not to be confused with the Estremadura region of neighbouring Portugal. Extremadura is described as ‘a scenic, sparsely populated region in Spain’s south-west. Last year [2017] unemployment stood at 26.3%, among the highest rates for any region in the EU,‘ (Charlemagne, The Economist May 5th 2018, p.35).
