El Dorado County lies within the blanket Sierra Foothills AVA, in California. As well as its own El Dorado AVA the county also hosts the Fair Play AVA. El Dorado County’s vineyards are much higher and thus cooler than those of its Sierra Foothills counterpart Amador county. They rise from around 460 metres (1,500 ft) to over 1,160 metres (3,600 ft) (Oxford Companion 2015, p667).
