The area is hilly Piedmont at around 400 metres asl. The soils are of marine origin, mostly sandy with clayey sections and arenaceous elements of a Pliocene origin in banks or blocks, referred to locally as tuff, hence the name of the Tufico Verdicchio made by the Colonnara co-op. This type of soil has more marne than the Umbrian or Tuscan tufa, and is ‘more broken’.
