Coulure is the French viticultural term for berry shatter, whereby grapes fail to develop after flowering due to subsequent poor weather (excess rain, cold, heat, cloud cover) which reduces photosynthesis. Excess vigour can also lead to coulure due to a lack of carbohydrates. The English word ‘berry shatter’ is also used. See also millerandage.
