Château d’Esther is a Biodynamic estate winery in St Loubès and bordering the Dordogne river in the Entre-Deux-Mers region on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. The location allowed the wines to be shipped in barrel directly onto boats from the late 17th-century.
Owner: Fabian Thomas (from Bremen, Germany) since 2001.
Vineyards: 5.42ha of vines (0.56ha of white; rest is red). In Cavernes, a lieu-dit in the commune of Saint-Loubès, 12.5 miles (20km) north-east of the city of Bordeaux. The close proximity of the river means the vines grow on the palus.
Biodiversity: Hedges have been incorporated into the vineyard as habitat breaks. The vines are also surrounded by 17 types of fruit tree. Oats are sown as cover crops to reduce soil compaction. Seeds of wild flowers are mixed in at sowing to provide colour and pollen for bees and insects.
Certification: 2006 Full organic certification for the 2006 vintage. Full Biodynamic certification (Demeter France) from the 2012 vintage.
