Château Calon-Ségur is an estate in Saint Estèphe on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. It is the most northerly of the five St-Estèphe’s estates classified in 1855 and produces red wine under the Saint Estèphe AOC. Calon-Ségur is named after the 18th-century Comte de Ségur who said his ‘heart was at Calon’ (see the red heart on the bottle label) despite also owning both Château Lafite and Château Latour.

Owner: Denise Capbern Gasqueton since the death of her husband Phillipe Capbern-Gasqueton before the 1995 vintage. See also Château du Tertre in Margaux and Château d’Agassac.

The château: ‘The chateau itself is one of the finest in the region, with its distinctive squat towers and cloister-like entrance by the chai. It dates from the seventeenth century,’ says David Peppercorn (1991, p.194). The château building and most of the vineyard are surrounded by a stone wall.

Classification: 1855 3rd Growth.

Vineyard: 50ha in two plots to the north of Saint-Estèphe largely surrounded by a stone wall, the most northerly classed growth in the Médoc; gravel in ferruginous limestone (gravelly, chalky. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot used to divide evenly, but Merlot has been diminished somewhat to make way for Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon covers two thirds.

Winery: The old wooden vats were mothballed from 1973. Stainless steel vats were installed instead. In 1983 an underground barrel cellar was built, in an L-shaped along two sides of the old chai.
