Château Bouscaut is an estate winery just off the Route Nationale N113 in Cadaujac in the Pessac-Léognan AOC on the left bank of the Bordeaux region.
Owner: Sophie Lurton. Daughter of Lucien Lurton. Abandoned her career as a linguist to become involved in wine.
Staff: Cellar: Dominique de Beauregard (1990-96, then joined Domaine de Pecharieux, SW France). | Régiseur: Jean Delmas (1968-1979).
History: In the 17th-century the vineyard was known as Haut-Truchon. Bouscaut is marked on Cassini’s map at the end of the C18th. The chateau dates from the same period. In the 19th-century the Chabanneau family restructured the vineyard, drained it, and built a modern cellar. It was then owned by the Place family (who would bring show business celebrities here). In 1962 a serious fire (caused by singer Gilbert Bécaud cooking a sirloin steak on vine shoots) meant the chateau had to be rebuilt. In the 1960s the then owner Victor Place sold to an American syndicat (Wohlstetter-Sloan family). In December 1979 Lucien Lurton acquired the principal shareholding from the Wohlstetter-Sloan family.
Classification: 1959 Cru Classe (red & white).
Vineyards: Extend from the chateau’s terrace as far as the N113 in a single block. Pyrenean gravel over limestone. Mid-1990s: 37ha of Merlot (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Malbec (5%). 8 ha of Semillon (70%) and Sauvignon Blanc (30%).
Winery: The winery was renewed during the Wohlstetter-Sloan era. Stainless steel vats.
