Castillon-la-Bataille is one of eight communes on the right bank of the Bordeaux region whose red wines qualify for the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux AOC. It was here that the Battle of Castillon took place in 17 July 1453 which ended the 100 years war between France and England, and ending too England’s occupation of France (the English were left with the port of Calais in north-east France). The battle is recreated each year in nearby Belvès de Castillon.
