Under Cesare Francalanci Martinozzi, the Castelli Martinozzi estate won a prize for its wine in 1892 in a provincial wine-making contest held by the province of Siena.
Owner: Cesare Castelli, his daughter Cristina and his nephew Federico.
Staff: Oenologist and production manager: Giuseppe Bino. Oen consultant: Paolo Caciorgna.
History: The Villa Santa Restituta farm had defensive characteristics. In the old wine-cellar an external wall still has apertures for shooting whilst the small arched front door is elevated and was called “the door of the dead”, because it is so narrow it allows only one person to enter at a time, permitting better defence. The building has a wine cellar (still in use), a granary with riddles, small stables, a joiner’s workshop, a smithy with bellows, wooden ovens for making bread and for boiling the washing with ashes, a mill, a greenhouse for lemons for the winter and wells for rain water that are inter-connected by means of galleries. In one room silk-worms were bred. There were also looms for weaving, an ancient oil mill with stone mills and earthenware jugs that always conserved the extravirgin olive oil. During pressing, the oil could be separated and collected in stone bowls situated in a small place called “hell”, where oil for oil-lamps was collected. Above this area there is a small bell-tower together with the chapel built in 1700 and the clock turret with a marble face on which the single hand, the hour-hand, marked time. A small distance from the farm can still be seen the remains of an Etruscan road, which lead from Casentino to Roselle.
Estate vineyards: The estate is called Santa Restituta Castelli Martinozzi. It lies 10km from Montalcino and comprises 160 hectares of which 12 hectares are vineyards, 16 hectares are olive grove, plus woodland and grains. 400 to 480 m above sea level.
