Carpineto Montalcino is an estate in Località Rogarelli in the Montalcino region of Tuscany.
Owner: In early 2015 Carpineto acquired what was the Il Forteto del Drago estate in Montalcino. (The name, IL Fortéto del Drago, derives from the ‘fortéto’ or typical surrounding Maremma forest.) Carpineto’s Montalcino estate is one of the highest in the appellation at an altitude of 500 metres (1,350 ft) above sea level (my notes says 350-450m). It is located on a small hill about 1.2 miles (2km) from Montalcino town centre. The 53ha farm has historic stone buildings built over two centuries ago surrounded by 10 ha (25 acres) of vineyards planted to Sangiovese on a dry farmed hillside in perfect view just west of the township of Montalcino. The planting density is 2,20x 0,90 meters (7×3 feet) equivalent to over 5,000 vines per hectare trained to unilateral cordon. The sedimentary soil has a galestro frame with clay accumulations dating to the Eocene era (15 million years ago). The vineyards have a slightly northern exposure, facing north-north-west, exposed to the cool Tramontana wind from the north. They and are surrounded by thick woods which protect the vineyard from the warm and humid westerly winds that come up from the Maremma. The soils are of Eocene origin, rich in galestro (schistous clay). 10ha of 100% Sangiovese vines. Spurred cordon. 5,000 vines per hectare. Vine rows oriented N-S.
Winemaking: Stainless steel for fermentation. French and Slavonian oak for maturation. Underground ageing cellar, stone walls and vaulted ceilings.
