Cantina del Giusto is an estate winery in the Montepulciano region of Tuscany founded in 1995 by Piero del Giusto and his wife Luisa Neri. Their two children are Sonia and Susanna. Sonia’s son Nicolo Mariani began working here in 1998 when he was aged 14 (he was born in 1984). The main wines are Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG and Rosso di Montepulciano DOC.

Vineyards: 2018 8 hectares (19.8 acres) of vines, 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) of olives, and 6 hectares (14.8 acres) of cereal crops. | Terroir In the Acquaviva sub-zone in the northern sector of Montepulciano. ‘Clay–limestone soils. Hard to work. We sow cover crops. No NPK fertilisers are used,’ (Anteprima 2019).

Red wines

Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, Fontegrande: From a north-facing site called Fontegrande, near the ruins of what may have been a Roman spa (‘fonte’ is a watercourse, ‘grande’ means large). | 2016 90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo nero. 14% alcohol. 20,000 bottles. Fluid, simple (Anteprima 2018). | 2017 Tried capo-sommerso (40 days) for the first time with Luano Bensi as consultant oenologist). | 2018 14.5% 20–25,000 bottles. Bright, crunchy restaurant wine (Anteprima 2020).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Baradiero: 2014 85% Sangiovese, 15% Mammolo, Canaiolo Nero. Submerged cap. 24 months in botti. Simple, well made (Luano Bensi consulted), not trying too hard (Anteprima 2018).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOC, Cantina del Giusto: 2014 New oak nose, acetone. Thin, starting to dry out (Anteprima 2018).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Purth: 2010 90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo Nero. Nice, if a bit flat (Anteprima 2014).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, San Claudio II: 2001 Old style, old wood, VA and sweaty and dirty (Vino Nobile Consorzio tasting, 2005). | 2010 Bit stretched, bitter cherry, not bad but needs more ripeness and depth (Anteprima 2014).
