Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC is a denomination for red and pink wines from northernmost Tuscany. The area has deep winemaking roots. The main grape is Vermentino, plus Albarola Trebbiano and Malvasia.
Production zone: In the Apuan Alps. On suitable sites – steep slopes facing the Tyrrhenian sea, within of the municipalities of Carrara, Massa and Montignoso, in the province of Massa Carrara in the Apuan Hills of Tuscany.
Wine grapes: Barsaglina (red). | Vermentino Nero.
Viticulture: New plantings must be at a minimum vine density of 6,000 vines per hectare for an average yield per plant of 1.5 kg (9 tonnes/ha maximum) plus 20% extra in favourable years.
Winemaking: The wines must be made within the production zone.
White wines
Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC Bianco: 70-100% Vermentino Bianco plus 0-30% white grapes authorised in Tuscany. The wine can be made as either ‘secco’ or ‘amabile’.
Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC Vermentino Bianco: 85-100% Vermentino bianco plus 0-15% white grapes authorised in Tuscany.

Red wines
Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC Rosso: 60-80% Sangiovese and upto 20% Merlot plus 20-30% other red grapes authorised in Tuscany. 50% maximum Merlot in a Sangiovese-Merlot blend.
Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC Vermentino Nero: 85-100% Vermentino Nero plus 0-15% red grapes authorised in Tuscany.
Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC Barsaglina or Massaretta: 85-100% Barsaglina Nero plus 0-15% red grapes authorised in Tuscany.
