Bourg, port partly on both the Dordogne River and the Gironde estuary on the right bank of the Bordeaux region. It gives its name to the Côtes de Bourg AOC. Bourg was once strategically important (along with the port of Blaye further up on the Gironde) when the kings of England held sway in Aquitaine (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.569). Its 17th-century fortress was built by Vauban on medieval foundations. His other fortress is across the water at Lamarque in the Médoc, and the ferry service between the two towns ia ‘a reminder of how much more important the river used to be,’ (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.570). See also the adjoining Blaye AOC and Blaye–Côtes de Bordeaux AOC.
Terroir: The best vineyard sites, as in the Médoc are on slopes near the Gironde.
Red wines: ‘Straightforward, rich and fleshy texture, drink at 3–4 years, plus 3 or 4 more in good vintages,’ (David Peppercorn MW (1991, p.569).
