BORGO CASA AL VENTO is an organic winery in the township (‘comune’) of Gaiole-in-Chianti in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany. Not to be confused with Casalvento in Radda in Chianti.

OWNER | Giuseppe Gioffreda’s family.

BACKGROUND | 15th-century estate. Borgo Casa al Vento was bought in 1992 by Giuseppe Gioffreda and family (the estate had been abandoned and he restored it). Vineyards, a winery (2000) and visitor facilities (see below) were added.

STAFF | Consultant winemaker: No (2019).

VINEYARDS | 15ha of land of which 8ha vines (35,000 bottles), 3ha olives, the rest forest. The vines grown on galestro and clay soils.

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION | 2009 Organic conversion begins. / 2012 First vintage with full organic certification.

WHITE WINES

ALLARIA | Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented on skins fof 14 days in stainless steel. 

RED WINES

CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG, ARIA | From Sangiovese. 450 metres asl. 2015 100% Sangiovese. / 2016 100% Sangiovese. Some old vines in this. 6m in second fill barrels. Has nice weight and smoothness at the Anteprima Feb 2019.

CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG RISERVA, FOHO | 450 metres asl. Organic. The name derives from a story connecting to ther Pope. / 2014 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. Organic. / 2015 100% Sangiovese. Organic. 18 months in oak of which 12m in new oak barrels and 6m in tonneaux. Clear and refreshing fruit at the Anteprima Feb 2019.

TOSCANA ROSSO, FATA | 100% Merlot. 18m in oak barrels.

TOSCANA ROSSO, GAIOLE | 60% Sangiovese, 40% Merlot.

TOURISM

The whole package: wellness centre, weddings etc. Beds in the rooms are made from recycled wood for old vats. Hydro massage in a tank made from an oak wine vat. Restaurant and cooking classes.
