Belvès de Castillon is one of eight communes on the right bank of the Bordeaux region whose red wines qualify for the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux AOC.
Terroir: Belvès forms the geographical heart of the Côtes de Castillon AOC, being the only Côtes de Castillon commune to touch neither the Dordogne, Saint-Émilion or the Périgord. The hill of Belvès acts as a natural shield to the Francs-Cotes de Bordeaux AOC to the east. In the 14th-century Belvès was a strategic site for the English during their medieval occupation of France.
Events: Château de Castegens is the site for the son et lumière (sound and light) recreation of the Battle of Castillon, fought on 17 July 1453 in what was then Gascony around the nearby town of Castillon la Bataille (Castillon-sur-Dordogne). The decisive French victory marked the end of the Hundred Years’ War. The defeated English lost all their landholdings in France, with the exception of the northern port of Calais.
