Bellegarde is a ‘rather attractive town lying beneath a small hill between Nîmes and Arles on the Rhône-Sète canal’ (Clive Coates MW: 1990, p.369). The town, which is in the Gard department of France in the southern Rhône, has its own appellation for white wine, Clairette de Bellegarde AOC. Bellegarde is also one of 24 communes entitled to the Costières de Nîmes AOC.
