Bas-Médoc is the northerly, lower-lying, heavier soiled half of the Médoc in the Bordeaux region of France and whose red wines can be bottled under the Médoc AOC. Red wines from the more gravelly, better-drained southern or Haut-Médoc half closest to Bordeaux qualify for the Haut-Médoc AOC, and host all those wineries classified in 1855 (none lie in the Bas-Médoc).
