Avensan is a commune in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. Its red wines qualify for the Médoc, Haut-Médoc and/or Moulis-en-Médoc AOCs. Avensan lies west of Soussans, west of Lamarque, south-east of but adjacent to Moulis-en-Médoc and 4.3miles (7 km) from the Gironde estuary. Vines vie with forest, arable farms and (historically) gravel quarries for space. The surviving gravel in Avensan runs in a kilometre wide band from south east to north west and is almost entirely occupied by vineyards.
