Ampelos Cellars is a Biodynamic vineyard located in the Santa Rita Hills AVA of California. The Greek name stems from the owners Peter and Rebecca Work’s ties to Greece. They were married in Greece and own a small hotel there. Ampelos (Greek: Ἂμπελος, lit. “Vine”) or Ampelus (Latin) was a personification of the grapevine and lover of Dionysus in Greek and Roman mythology. He was a satyr that either turned into a Constellation or the grape vine, due to Dionysus.
Owner: Peter and Rebecca Work.
Vineyards: ‘We purchased 82 acres in 1999 not knowing that one day it would be part of the Santa Rita Hills AVA (a sub-region of the Santa Ynez Valley). The first 15 acres were planted in 2001 and in 2005 we expanded with another 10 acres so today we have a total of 25 acres planted. Our focus is Viognier, Syrah (for pink wine), Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache,’ the owners say.
