Alto Adige DOC Chardonnay, white wine from Alto Adige in northern Italy (see Alto Adige DOC). Minimum 85% Chardonnay. It can be made as a ‘passito’ or ‘vendemmia tardiva’ or ‘riserva’. Chardonnay in Alto Adige is primarily grown in Bassa Atesina, Oltradige and Adige Valley. Lower hilly areas or else to the valley floor, preferably on chalky gravel soils. Chardonnay experienced an enormous boost in popularity here in the 1980s.
