Ventolaio is an estate winery in Località Ventolaio in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate area of south-east Montalcino in Tuscany, Italy, on the route that leads from Montalcino to Sant’Antimo Abbey. Its main wines are Rosso di Montalcino DOC and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Ventolaio has been owned by the Fanti family for generations. In 1988 Luigi Fanti inherited the farm from his father. From the early 1990s Luigi and his wife Maria Assunta began restoring the farmhouse. They planted their first vineyard in 1990. From 2000 the estate began marketing its own wines.

Vineyards: 14ha. At Località Ventolaio on the Poggio d’Arna hill, which is near the abbey of Sant’Antimo on the way to Monte Amiata Scalo. 400-450 metres. South/south-east facing. Galestro soils. In their words ‘the terrain is essentially a mixture composed by clay and a lot of stones and gravel inside itself).

Winemaking: Stainless steel for fermentation. 30hl French and Slavonian oak vats for ageing.

IGT Toscana Rosso

Rosso di Montalcino DOC: 2012 5,000 bottles. 12 months in botti and tonneaux, then blended in steel and aged and then bottled. High tone, a bit acetic (Anteprima 2015). | 2013 Bit stretched and green, also dirty and a bit oxidised (Anteprima 2016). | 2017 Light, fluid, lightly leafy red fruit (Feb 2019). | 2018 15,000 bottles.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG | 2000 High tone and light (Anteprima 2005). | 2010 26,000 bottles. Acetic (Anteprima  2015). | 2011 Simple, plump, green, bit blurred (Anteprima 2016). | 2014 A bit dry, lean, more of a Rosso di Montalcino than a Brunello (Anteprima 2019). | 2015 40,000 bottles.
