Terre di Melazzano is an estate winery in Greve-in-Chianti in the Chianti Classico DOCG region of Tuscany.

Terre di Melazzano was founded in 1959 when Piero Giulio Falciani, a winemaker for generations, purchased the estate, planted the first vineyards, began the renovation of the old farmhouse and built the cella.

Later the management passed to his son Andrea. He increased the vineyard area to 22 hectares today, and developed agritourism here. Andrea’s daughter Chiara, who has a degree in economics from the University of Siena, is also now involved.

In 2012 the company acquired another Andrea, Andrea Pirovano, a Valtellina winemaker graduated from the University of Milan and a Master’s degree from the University of Florence, who arrived in Tuscany to study the traditional production systems of Chianti Classico and remained for the beauty of the places. and for the meeting with Chiara.

Terroir: Terre di Melazzano is located on the hill that leads to Monte San Michele (altitude is 840 m asl.), which is part of the Chianti Mountains and is located in the highest position, on the border between the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo. It is a natural park, with numerous species of animals including wild boar, fallow deer, roe deer, fox and porcupine. The vegetation is typical of the Chianti wood with a predominance of chestnut, Turkey oak, downy oak, ash, poplar and wild cherry.

The historical origins of the area can be traced back to the church of San Michele located on top of the mountain which was erected around the year 1000 by the Vallombrosan monks of Passignano. Inside there is a fresco depicting the Madonna and Saints (including the Archangel Michael) attributed to Paolo Schiavo and made in the first half of the 15th century.

Organic certification | Yes (check).

Terroir: The land consists mainly of sandstone rocks and cleavage sands coming from the mother rock, in particular the galestro; the characteristics of altitude and exposure, perfect aeration and prolonged solar lighting complete a perfect “terroir”. On all our vineyards the fertilization is only organic.

Vineyard sites

Melazzano vineyard: The Melazzano Vineyard is located at 280 meters above sea level and extends over the gentle hill below the company for 12 ha, with an optimal south-east south-west layout. There are the old Sangiovese vines, characterized by low productivity but by a very high quality that allows a particular aging ability of the wines produced. New plants of Sangiovese and Merlot are flanked, partly cultivated with “spurred cordon” and partly with “guyot”.

Prono Vineyard: Prono occupies the hill to the right of Terre di Melazzano. On an area of 6 Ha, with south-west exposure and, thanks to the particular soil and climate characteristics, it hosts recent plants of specific clones of Sangiovese R 10 and Cannaiolo.

Poggiarelli vineyard: Located at the top of the hill to the left of Terre di Melazzano, it has an area of 7 Ha, for twenty years entirely cultivated with Sangiovese. Thanks to its raised position it enjoys a high ventilation which guarantees a greater temperature range than the bottom of the valley. Given the quality of the “Poggiarelli” grapes, characterized by very low phytosanitary problems, in 2012 we decided to produce our innovative Chianti Classico without sulfites, a unique product of its kind.

In 2014 Poggiarelli had two more hectares of vineyards added, partly of white grapes destined for the production of Vin Santo.
