Piaggia is an estate in Poggio a Caiano in Prato province in Tuscany. It produces Carmignano DOCG red wines. It was founded in the 1970s by Mauro Vannucci whose business was textiles. The estate was more of a rural retreat until the late 1980’s when his daughter took over.

Owner: Mauro Vannucci. His daughter is Silvia Vannucci.

Vineyards, wine production: 15ha producing 75,000 bottles (Gambero Rosso: 2015, p.620).

Terroir: Initially in Poggio a Caiano only, then more vines were acquired in CarmignanoMedium-textured soil with clay and galestro 250 m. above sea level. Some well sited vines it seems.

Pink wines

Rosato del Carmignano DOC, Viti dell’Erta: Viti dell’Erta is the name for a steep part of the vineyard. Rosato di Carmignano is also locally called “Vin Ruspo”. Made from Sangiovese plus other grapes growing in the Carmignano production. | 2000 Bottled.

Red wines

Poggio de’ Colli, Cabernet Franc, Toscana IGT: 100% Cabernet Franc. From what may be Cabernet biotypes. Guyot. 6,250 vines per hectare. Medium-textured soil with clay and galestro 250 m. above sea level. Silvia Vannucci, Mauro her dad. Hot season, good work in vines, healthy. Picked end of Sept. Great year. 14% alc. Spontaneous fermentation in open oak vats with manual punchdowns. Racked to French oak barrels for ageing. 

Pietranera, Toscana IGT:

Carmignano DOCG Il Sasso: From Sasso, an estate vineyard in Santa Cristina a Mezzana. 250m. South-west facing. The second wine. | 1999 Produced. | 2000 Sangiovese mainly plus Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Carmignano DOCG Riserva, Piaggia: The flagship. From an old vineyard near Poggetto. 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. | 1994 Bottled. | 1995 Bottled. | 1996 Bottled. | 1997 Bottled. 1998 Bottled.
