Montescudaio is a commune the south of Pisa province in the Italian region of Tuscany, on the border with the province of Grosseto and about 70 kms southwest of Florence and about 45 kms southeast of Pisa. Montescudaio, which stands on a hill with a view of the plane of Cecina and the Tyrrhenian sea was a fortified village. Its name derives from Mons Scutarum, Latin for “mountain of shields” as the town’s strategic importance was due to its position dominating the entire surrounding area. It gives its name to the Montescudaio DOC. The foundation of the monastery around which the Della Gherardesia built a village and castle dates to before the year 1000.
