Montefalco, 2012 vintage: See Montefalco DOC. | Montefalco region of Umbria.

2012 Rating **** (four). Growing season Cold, dry winter. A drier than usual growing season. Mild, dry spring. Some cold spells between April and May (cold nights). Dry, hot summer with heat spikes. One of the hottest and dry summers of the last years, especially in the months of June, July and August. Hot winds until the end of August. Vine stress from heat in September and October. ‘Very hot summer, but Sagrantino resisted the water stress,’ (Stephen Brook, 2016). Some useful localised rainfall in September helped optimal grape ripeness and overall balance. Quick maturation. Sagrantino able to cope better that most grapes in such circumstances. Healthy grapes, lower than average yields. Long macerations possible. Wine style High alcohol levels, long ferments. Big wines with structure. ‘Quality should be very good,’ (Stephen Brook, 2016).
