The DOC Lison-Pramaggiore area stretches between the provinces of Pordenone, Treviso and Venice, whose borders are marked by the river Tagliamento to the east, and by the Livenza to the west. The Denomination takes its name from the villages of Lison, a suburb of Portogruaro, and Pramaggiore, which have a central position compared to the entire production area. The area is characterized by flat land surfaced over the millennia due to glaciation, and by subsequent alluvial deposits, transported by the water deriving from the melting of ancient retreating glaciers. This happened especially during the third glaciation, in the period called “Wurmian”. The river Tagliamento, during ancient floods and frequent changes of river bed, was largely responsible for the formation of the soil in the area.

The interplay of gradients and different transport led the minute particles of clay limestone to settle in this territory, characterizing most of the soils in the wine growing area. Moreover, the same soils are characterized by the formation of various aggregation layers of carbonates at shallow depth, from which the typical local saying “lands rich of caranto” is derived. These soils confirm what has been known for some time, and that is, calcium-rich soils produce fine wines, rich in aromatic substances. From the climatic point of view, the DOC Lison-Pramaggiore area is favored by a temperate climate; this characterization is due to the latitude, as well as to the proximity of the sea, the plain and subsequent exposure to the winds.
