La Ciarliana is an estate winery in Località La Ciarliana, in the north-eastern part of the Montepulciano region of Tuscany, Italy. It makes Chianti DOCG, Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG red wines, plus a Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC

Owner: Luigi Frangiosa (third generation. +39 335 565 2718). He succeeded his father Santo Pellegrino, who in turn had succeeded his own father.

Staff: Consultant oenologist: Mario Ronco (2013+) who succeeded Paolo Vagaggini.

Vineyards: 20 hectares (49.4 acres) of vines in two sub-regions in the southern sector of Montepulciano, namely Ascianello and Ciarliana, separated from each other by the Salarco river. (One of the sites overlooks some Etruscan ruins). 3309C rootstock on galestro, 420A rootstock on clay, red clay.

Viticulture: Limited or no trimming (Anteprima 2020).

Vigna Scianello: 330 metres asl. Patchwork of four soil types: Galestro, tufa, calcareous clay, and clay (iron-rich clay I think).

Santo Pellegrino: Toscano Rosso.

Rosso di Montepulciano DOC2012 Plummy sweet fruit, then some green tannins, so a bit too extracted (Anteprima 2014). | 2018 Plummy, rich (Anteprima 2020).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, La Ciarliana: 2010 95% Sangiovese, 5% Mammolo. Aged in botti (70%) and barrel (30%). Tidy, clean red fruit )Anteprima 2018). Consultant oenologist: Mario Ronco (Piemonte). | 2010 14.5%. Brightly polished fruit (Anteprima 2014). | 2011 Simple and sticky (Anteprima 2014). | 2015 Bright fruit and oaky, bricky-savoury dry texture (Anteprima 2018). | 2017 15,000 bottles. Bright and savoury (Anteprima 2020).

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Riserva: 1998 Bottled.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, Selezione Vigna Scianello: From the vineyard of that name (see above). 2012 Light, smoothish fruit with a slightly drying finish (from a bit of added Merlot?). Drink up (Anteprima 2018). | 2015 100% Sangiovese. 4,000 bottles. Nice richness of fruit-tannin (Anteprima 2020).
