Kékfrankos is the name given to the Blaufränkisch or Lemberger red wine grape variety in Hungary. The name Blaufränkisch translates to ‘blue wine of the Franks’. From pre-medieval times it was common to divide grape varieties into the (superior) ‘fränkisch’, whose origins lay with the Franks, and the rest. Blossoming during the Austro-Hungarian empire.
