Genoa (Genova in Italian) is the capital city of the Liguria region of Italy, and one of that country’s three most important ports (the others being Naples and Venice). Hugh Johnson: (1991, p.307) says Genoa is ‘Italy’s greatest port and one of its most cosmopolitan cities.’
