Fongoli is a family owned winery in the Montefalco region of Umbria, Italy. It makes wines under the following denominations: Colli Martani DOC, Colli Perugini DOC, Spoleto DOC, Montefalco Rosso DOC and Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG.
Owner: Angelo Fongoli. He works with his wife who is from Spoleto in Umbria. Both sets of Angelo’s grandparents had vines, in Rimini on the Adriatic coast in the Emilia-Romagna region on his mother’s side, and in Montefalco from his father’s side.
Staff: In 2019 I was told Vittorio Fiore and Barbara Tamburini were no longer consulting here after 25 years. From 2017 Matura was advising on vineyards, and Emiliano Falsini was consulting on winemaking.
Estate vineyards: 2018 20ha of vines. All in one place. 300-450 metres altitude. Veterana is a single vineyard which research suggests was planted in the late 1800s. Spurred cordon.
Organics, Biodynamics | 2011 Went organic. Then after 2 years went Biodynamic for the whole estate. Changed to lighter and less tillage and cover crops to avoid soil compaction.
Organic certification: Yes.
Olive trees: 15ha of olives. Fongoli trialled ruminants instead of machinery for weed control in the olive groves.
Oak forest | Truffles are found in the woods.
Winemaking: Abandoned filtration in 2017.
Colli Martani Bianco DOC, Grechetto: 2010 Full-bodied, creamy colour, ripe and full at 31 Wentworth Grange with Andrew Kennedy on Wednesday 19th September 2012 (bottle purchased earlier that day in Winchester).
Colli Perugini DOC, Grechetti: 2018 100% Grechetto.
Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino DOC, Maceratum: 2018 100% Trebbiano Spoletino. 12.5% alc. Cane pruned vines (Guyot). Hand picked. Wild ferment on skins in vats and open-topped amphora with no added sulfites or temperature control. The skins were kept in and were plunged down manually as a means of oxygenation. The wine spent two months on the lees and was settled naturally.
Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino DOC, Laetizia
Montefalco Rosso DOC, Organic
Montefalco Rosso DOC Riserva, Surplus: 2015 14.5%. Open topped fermentation vats. 4,000 bottles. Nice rich, dark fruit. Well made (Anteprima 2019).
Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, Fongoli: 2015 Fermented in stainless steel, aged in large wooden vats. Ripe, dark, old vines fruit, plenty of texture, good traditional style (Anteprima 2019).
Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, Fracanton: 2013 100% Sagrantino. 15.5% alc. From 40 year old vines trained to ‘palmetto’. 3 months on skins in terracotta. 36 months in large oak vats. Lovely old vine depth to the tannins (Anteprima 2019).
