Fongoli is a family owned winery in the Montefalco region of Umbria, Italy. It makes wines under the following denominations: Colli Martani DOC, Colli Perugini DOC, Spoleto DOC, Montefalco Rosso DOC and Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG.

Owner: Angelo Fongoli. He works with his wife who is from Spoleto in Umbria. Both sets of Angelo’s grandparents had vines, in Rimini on the Adriatic coast in the Emilia-Romagna region on his mother’s side, and in Montefalco from his father’s side.

Staff: In 2019 I was told Vittorio Fiore and Barbara Tamburini were no longer consulting here after 25 years. From 2017 Matura was advising on vineyards, and Emiliano Falsini was consulting on winemaking.

Estate vineyards: 2018 20ha of vines. All in one place. 300-450 metres altitude. Veterana is a single vineyard which research suggests was planted in the late 1800s. Spurred cordon.

Organics, Biodynamics2011 Went organic. Then after 2 years went Biodynamic for the whole estate. Changed to lighter and less tillage and cover crops to avoid soil compaction.

Organic certification: Yes.

Olive trees: 15ha of olives. Fongoli trialled ruminants instead of machinery for weed control in the olive groves.

Oak forest:Truffles are found in the woods.

Winemaking: Abandoned filtration in 2017.
